Movement of God

I'm a student of the Bible. I love to read it; really I do. I often can speak in terms of what the Bible says, interpret what God has to day, and help other people grasp hold of His prophetic words. On the other hand, I'm a simple man. I can be reduced to a puddle rather simply, if one just knows where to push my buttons. My God is one who knows where to push my buttons. And sometimes He really does. Today was one of those days.

Have you ever experienced a direct confrontation with God? You know, the Bible speaks of events in people's lives that were unmistakably God intervening. The burning bush --- that talked. The Red Sea parting, the river that stopped flowing. The darkness in the middle of the day. These events all describe circumstances that were so remarkable that those who found themselves in those circumstances couldn't help but stand in awe of an amazing God. If you haven't, I feel sorry for you. Those times can really help put the rest of your life into perspective. I'm not exactly sure how they do, but they do. Perhaps more importantly, they come spiritual milestones by which we can remember all the other things about life.

So my event today was unmistakably God. I'm working on a client project and have these hare-brained ideas of what could ideally happen. Most people hear those dreams and think I'm rather crazy --- at best. But you see, God made me a dreamer. I see things that aren't there. I imagine what can be. I start with the possibilities and am never troubled by the boundaries. (In fact, I'm only troubled by the fact that the rest of the world doesn't seem to share my view.)

Anyway, this client does a complete about-face and comes back proposing a mega-deal that is beyond the wildest imagination of anyone involved. They scheduled a conference call and e-mailed a bunch of slides to outline what they wanted to talk about. Then what they wanted to talk about was the biggest, boldest --- most exciting initiative that we could have imagined. That we opened this conference call with prayer should have been a clue. As we sat and listened to them outline what they wanted, I had trouble responding. I was fighting back tears. I found myself speechless ---- which is a foreign land for me! All I could think was, "Wow! This is really You, God! It's really You!"

I wonder if this is how it was for the Biblical characters who experienced these massive movements of God --- parting the heavens and re-ordering the universe in order to favor them. That's how it seemed. The rest of the day was interesting, but this one hour of my day became the benchmark for a place in my life. I'm not sure how we proceed or how the rest of this story unfolds. I'll be in Washington, DC next week and Los Angeles the week after ... working to pull this together. Suffice to say that it changes life for me and for a lot of other people if it happens the way it looked today.

So this is how it must be when an amazing God moves. Life changes. People are humbled; even reduced to tears of joy and adoration. Suddenly the futility of the circumstances fades into the shadow of the brilliant light that He shines. History changes. And God is glorified. I don't suppose I could ever really comprehend this wonderful God. I'm certain I could never really explain Him either. But I have to tell you, it is a marvel to watch Him. There is no life compared to life at His feet, watching His work. And that's where I got to sit today.
